I don't know if this is a bug or it's something I'm doing wrong. I use Linkinus to connect to a chatroom where I am writing in Romanian using the Romanian keyboard layout available on Mac OS X 10.5.6. There are a few characters specific to Romanian language. The problem is with one of them, namely "a breve" (looking like this: Ă ă), which isn't being displayed at all when someone other than me types it. I can see it in my own messages, but not in messages written by others. It isn't being replaced by question marks or anything else, it's just not there. Moreover, the following two or three characters following it in a word are also missing.

Please note that I am using UTF-8 encoding for all servers I conect to. Also the font I am using is Lucida Grande, which has the entire set of Romanian characters.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Incoming messages may not be UTF-8 and the current release of Linkinus does not support auto-detect. When people send you such characters in a none UTF-8 way (or whatever encoding you use) Linkinus will fail to display them.

The thing is all the other Romanian specific characters look fine (Ș, Ț, Î, Â). Ă is the only one with this problem. I ran all kinds of tests, sending UTF8-encoded messages using other IRC clients, changing the settings etc.

Could you change your local encoding in Linkinus to an ISO-something (which matches what is usually used by you) and check again?

ISO-8859-2 should work for Romanian but in Linkinus is worse than UTF8, all Romanian characters are replaced by other symbols and letters.

  6. This sounds interesting. For some reason I couldn't reproduce it though. Is there any other piece of information you feel is relevant to your problem?

    Some new information:
    - I can reproduce this bug on two different Macs running 10.5.6; also on a friend's computer.
    - I've just noticed the "Ăă" characters appear OK in the Growl bubbles announcing a new message received. I think this means Linkinus receives them but is unable to display them in the main window.
